When I was younger I had little confidence. I am naturally quiet and for a lot of the time I was dominated by most people around me. I felt isolated at times and was afraid to speak up about anything. Showing emotions felt scary so I learned to hide them. I didn’t trust my feelings or believe in myself. I couldn’t find my voice.

I remember visiting a counsellor in my thirties, after being persuaded by a friend. Little did I know that the one session I had would be life changing. As I described how I was feeling and things that had happened in my life, the counsellor said something I will never forget. ‘It sounds like you’ve jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.’ In that moment I realised that that was exactly how I felt.

More than that I felt validated, heard, respected, seen, included and visible for what felt like the first time in my life. This moment was the beginning of the new chapters in my life. I realised that I did have a voice and I could begin to believe in myself. It was a small seedling of hope which began years ago and has continued to develop and grow.

There have been doubts and setbacks along my journey into my new future. My confidence had been severely knocked in the past by bullying and I know now that I have been through periods of depression. Heading into the new unknown was a challenge for me. I was changing long established ways of thinking and behaving.

Slowly, by reading, talking to friends, and counselling, both personal and in training, I began to believe and trust in myself. I came to realise that what I’d been through was emotional abuse. I also know that it is possible to recover from the invisible wounds it creates.

Now I’m drawn to helping people who suffered from this too, so that they can recognise their own emotional abuse and begin to recover. I am passionate about helping people find their voice, feel valued, develop their self-awareness, understanding and confidence so they can believe and trust in themselves.
